Functional Medicine for Pharmacists: Root Cause Approaches to Medication Therapy Management

The Institute for Functional Medicine, in collaboration with Pharm to Table Functional Medicine CE, has created a training course specifically designed for pharmacists interested in applying functional medicine in their pharmacy practice. This online, self-paced course combines foundational concepts in functional medicine assessment and plan design with medication management to equip pharmacists with the necessary tools to offer personalized, whole-person care to their patients. The course includes an introduction to functional medicine tools and principles that will enable pharmacists to assess disease status through a systems biology lens and utilize the Functional Medicine Matrix to assess patients and design personalized treatment plans. The course also explores topics such as drug-induced nutrient depletions, drug-nutrient interactions, and drug-herb interactions using case-based learning. Pharmacists will learn how to apply a functional medicine approach to medication therapy management and play an active role in patient nutraceutical management.

The course is for pharmacists interested in learning or enhancing their knowledge of functional medicine and applying a whole-person approach to monitor patient conditions and managing their medications and nutraceuticals. Prior training in functional medicine isn’t required and the course is suitable for all pharmacists, especially those in a consulting practice or practicing in community pharmacy, retail, and ambulatory care setting.
