Friends and Colleagues,
As we approach the holiday season, I’ve found myself reflecting over the past 11 months. Without a doubt, the events of 2020 are associated with immense pain, tragedy, and loss; from a global pandemic that is crippling our healthcare system and our economic position to the pandemic of racism that continues to cripple our humanity. And yet, in spite of it all, daily we witness acts of strength, courage, love, and commitment among our families, friends, communities, and even strangers.
My sense of gratitude for the uplifting moments is at the heart of this letter—the moments when we can find happiness amongst hardship are something to be proud of and celebrate. Gratitude for our essential workers and caregivers on the frontlines of this pandemic fighting this fight daily. Gratitude that we are able to provide individualized care for each patient using a model that supports optimal health and wellness. Gratitude that we are coming together as partners and community members bound by a commitment to address health disparities, injustices, and inequities and work to ensure we are serving all patient populations, especially those that are the most vulnerable and underserved. Gratitude for our families and friends who support us when we need it most. And gratitude for each of you for the critical role you are playing in your family, your community, and more importantly, your own life.
Thank you for your perseverance in a turmoil-filled year. Your fortitude is nothing short of inspiring—for this, you have my sincere thanks. So, as you read this note and over the holiday season, I encourage you to take a few minutes to practice gratitude or another mindfulness technique that will fill your mental, emotional, and spiritual cup. As we care for our patients and loved ones, please don’t forget the importance of your own self-care.
Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season.
Yours in service,
