The Patient Education Series (PES) is a group of interactive, online, on-demand educational modules designed to guide patients through any of the IFM food plans. If you are a clinician who currently uses, or would like to begin using, any of IFM’s food plans with patients, then PES is for you. Access to PES, with the ability to easily distribute to patients, can be purchased separately or as part of the Therapeutic Food Plans: A Component of Personalized Nutrition (TFP) online course.
PES has benefits for both practitioners and patients, including:
- Convenient way to introduce patients to any of IFM’s 8 food plans
- Saves practitioner time that otherwise would be spent repeating the same basic plan information to each patient for which it is indicated
- Allows practitioners to focus on the elements of a food plan that are personalized for each patient
- Provides patients continued access to the basics of their plan in case they have questions or forget an element of the plan
- Helps set up patients for success in adopting sustained lifestyle and dietary changes
- Can be delivered to patients via EMR patient portals or other methods as needed
The PES series includes all of IFM’s food plans:
- Core Food Plan
- Cardio Food Plan
- Detox Food Plan
- Phytonutrient Spectrum
- Mito Food Plan
- Elimination Diet
- Low-FODMAP Food Plan
- Anti-Candida Food Plan

Patient Education Series FAQ
Q: Am I required to take any other IFM courses prior?
A: No, however IFM strongly recommends that you take AFMCP first. Although IFM’s proprietary tools, such as the Functional Medicine Matrix, are reviewed during this course, AFMCP provides in-depth context for the skills, processes, and science behind incorporating functional medicine principles into practice. AFMCP is offered multiple times each year, go to ifm.org/afmcp for more information.
Q: I am a single practitioner practice, can I share my PES subscription with other practitioners?
A: No. Your PES subscription cannot be transferred or shared with practitioners outside of your practice. However, your subscription does admit practitioners from your same practice. Note that the Therapeutic Food Plans elearning course may not be shared outside or within your practice.
Q: Will I be certified as a functional medicine practitioner after completing the course?
A: No. This course is not included in the IFM Certification Pathway. The pathway for the IFM Certification Program requires you to complete AFMCP and the six Advanced Practice Modules as well as pass a certification exam.
Q: What IFM patient education materials are available during this course?
A: Each module of the course offers resources to download, print, and distribute to your patients. These include over 46 toolkit resource: comprehensive guides for following each food plan, shopping lists, recipes, and strategies to address other lifestyle factors. While not required for completion of this course, IFM’s Patient Education Series compliments the TFP course learnings and is a tool to help patients understand how to follow their personalized version of the IFM food plans.
