The application of functional medicine can be successfully applied in any specialty and in any collaborative care situation. Dr. Stone has looked through the functional medicine lens practicing ER medicine, chronic wound and hyperbaric medicine, and delivering prenatal and full pregnancy care while practicing in primary care settings since 1991 through 2023.

He has been actively advocating for The Institute for Functional Medicine since the first AFMCP in 1998 and has been active as faculty since the nutrition curriculum initiative in 2004. In his clinic, functional medicine application in the collaborative care team concepts and group medical visits began in 2004. He had a very successful insurance-based practice for over 20 years, delivering functional medicine care in primary care from preconception through hospice. Dr. Stone has been a consultant for medical school and residency programs nationally and internationally and has been involved in research starting with bench and pre-phase 1 (starting in 1976) and clinical research starting in 1983, private practice research 2009, and as a PI or Sub-I in phase 1/2a through phase 3 research today.

Dr. Stone continues to be the medical advisor for the Office of Personalized Health and Well Being, University of Georgia, Athens, while consulting in functional medicine. His interest and focus is on developmental programming of health (not disease), the ABCDs of Nutrition Evaluation, and the mouth/body/health connection. Building resilience begins by first recognizing the patterns or phenotypes of dysfunction, which then helps us as clinicians to begin aiding the patient in crafting a successful therapeutic plan.
