David Jones, MD
David Scott Jones, MD, was one of the first physicians to integrate functional medicine into clinical practice. As one of the thought leaders contributing to the early development of the field, Dr. Jones brought distinctive vision to the formative years of The Institute for Functional Medicine, serving as IFM’s first president and director of medical education from 2000 to 2013 (read more here).
David’s vision for the IFM clinical model focusing on a holistic search for the root cause of disease and illness was catalyzed in his 40-year clinical Family Practice in Ashland Oregon. Dr. Jones served his community as Ashland Community Hospital chief of staff and as president of the southern Oregon doctor’s organization Prime Care. His firm advocation for bringing a heart-centered focus to the therapeutic partnership has guided the mission for teaching and mentoring the therapeutic relationship in all IFM programs. In recognition of this commitment to furthering the field, Dr. Jones was the recipient of the 1997 Linus Pauling Award in Functional Medicine.
Currently a licensed emeritus MD in Oregon, Dr. Jones is retired from clinical practice. He maintains his role as an IFM co-founder and president emeritus as well as serving the IFM Board of Directors as vice chair. He has served as a scholar at the Institute for Integrative Health, now NOVA, in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Jones continues his commitment in expanded ways to further the functional medicine model in primary care medicine.
